I chose to respond to brief 4: a colourful story from the ISTD briefs for 2022. The brief asks to explore the use, meaning and significance of one particular colour. Exploring how colour is perceived in different contexts and cultures around the world and examining the impact these cultural differences have on communication.  In response to this brief, I have chosen to focus on the colour pink, to investigate the contradiction of the colour pink and how despite its feminine associations it plays a large role in various controversies of different themes across the world. The findings of this research inform a typographic response to the controversy about the colour pink. From my research, I have found that pink is a very controversial colour and it features in many cultural moments and conflicts. One reason why pink is a feature of these issues stems from pink being a feminine colour, this isn’t for all the cases, the psychology of the colour has an impact too. Pink wasn’t always a girl’s colour, I explore how the colour has changed over time and how our perception of colour changes.  This book aims to communicate how historically pink has proven to be one of the most emotionally evocative and controversial colours on the spectrum. The strong emotions aroused by the colour have led to numerous controversial events. This information is relevant to anyone interested in the drama of colour. Understanding the controversial history of the colour pink allows for a greater appreciation and understanding of the complex colour.
